Creating The Ultimate Automated Home System
When you transform your house into a smart home, you take control of your living environment and put everything at your fingertips. Some would call it a luxury, but is it a luxury to simplify your life, make your family and property more secure, and save time and money with the efficiencies these automated home systems provide? A smart home system can manage every electronic device in the house, from lights and thermostats to stereo systems and whirlpool tubs. The sprinkler system, telephones and video equipment can be integrated as well, creating a home that operates nearly on its own – or to the degree you would like it. Electronic devices can activate at a preset time of day, or according to conditions such as a sunrise or a signal from a motion sensor or button press. Most home control systems are sophisticated pieces of technology, and therefore are best installed and programmed by qualified professionals.
Automated home systems come in a wide range of styles, budgets, and performance levels. Generally, the most basic and least expensive home control system available is one that transmits commands to electronic devices via RF & WiFi. These systems are generally simple to install (just plug small boxes into wall outlets). Out of the box, RF systems are ready to operate lights and small household appliances.
If an automated home system isn’t zipping commands to lights, stereos, sprinklers, and other devices over a wireless home network, it’s probably doing so over a dedicated highway of low-voltage wire, which must be installed by a professional. All signal devices (inputs), like a motion sensor, security sensor and sunlight sensor, and all output devices, like a light switch, VCR, stereo and whirlpool tub, are wired via low-voltage cabling to a central processing unit (CPU). Unlike a powerline-based home control system that enlists a PC as its CPU, hardwired home control systems generally rely on a separate CPU designed solely for home-management purposes. Contained within the CPU are banks of microprocessors able to orchestrate very complex home-control routines. One signal from a motion sensor, for example, could launch an entire string of commands (a macro). It could magically transform a living room into a sensational home theater, or prepare the house for bedtime by closing the garage doors, arming the security system, switching off all but the hall lights, and lowering the thermostat. In the morning, the system might wake you by switching on the bedroom TV to your favorite program, opening the drapes, and starting the shower.
While all of this activity can happen automatically, as programmed into the CPU, most users opt to maintain at least some control over their homes. That’s why home control system manufacturers include keypads, touchpanel, telephones, handheld remote controls, or voice-recognition capabilities with their systems. The type of user interface, typically, is what differentiates home-control systems.
A touchpanel is comprised of a screen, either placed on a table or mounted to the wall, that responds to touch. It can be designed with any number of menu pages to access different controls, and can provide status reports and show you what’s happening around the house. With the recent release of the Apple Ipad many traditional touchpanels are being replaced with this less expensive option
Many keypad- and touchpanel-based home control systems can also be supervised from a handheld remote or your Iphone. While you’re on the road or at the office, you can connect to the system over the 3G network to rev up the AC and turn on the music for your arrival.
The Plan
Make a wish list of features you’d like your home to have before selecting a home control system. Often, such a home control system will have a specialty, like lighting or security. Select a system that everyone in the family is comfortable using, and that can be easily expanded. Think about the structure of your home. If the walls are already up, it’ll be easier (and less expensive) to install a Wifi based system. If your home is under construction, any system can be installed.
